Juice Reboot: Days 5 and 6

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

What I drank:

I started to juice kale. It doesn’t yield much juice, but it’s definitely one of the most nutrient rich things you can eat. Therefore, I juiced kale.

I also juiced fennel. This definitely offered a nice and varied taste to what I’ve been drinking for the past few days. If you’ve never tried it, it tastes kind of like black licorice.

As far as fruit goes, I originally was only juicing apples and pears but have since added oranges and lemons to many of my juices. I’ve also been drinking coconut water and adding that to some of my juices.

How I’m feeling:

Day 5 and Day 6 (for the most part) were the best days  on the reboot so far. I stopped craving food for the most part and didn’t experience any extreme hunger. If anything, I’m just getting a little tired of juicing so much. Cleaning the juicer four times a day is not a fun time. I’m happy to be more than half way done with the reboot at this point.

The morning of Day 5 I was down zero pounds from Day 4. By Day 6 I was down one pound. This puts my total weight loss from the reboot at 8 pounds. I’ve noticed that my body has been only dropping weight every other day on the reboot. Very interesting.

One of the best things about the reboot is how healthy my hair looks.

I’m not the only one that has noticed it, either.

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing for my skin.

My skin was starting breaking out pretty noticeably on Day 4.

And by Day 6 it’s looking even worse.

A few people offered some explanations. One could be the natural sugar found in the produce I’m juicing is making me break out. Another possibility is that the reboot is drawing out the impurities in my skin. Either way, I’m not happy about it and hoping it clears up by Day 10.

Ultimately, I’m pleased with myself for sticking out the reboot this long and I’m confident that I will finish it out, no problem. I will add that blogging about it and doing it with coworkers definitely helped me stick to the program. This is something to consider if you ever want to try it.

Juice Reboot: Day 4

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

What I drank:

Today I learned that you can most definitely juice broccoli. It’s definitely not the tastiest of juices and it definitely smells bad.

-pear and apple

-broccoli, carrot, and apple

-broccoli, celery, and apple

-cucumber, celery, and apple

Don’t mind my silk leopard bathrobe.

How I’m feeling:

Today was the first day of the reboot that I haven’t been occupied with work for 8 hours of the day. That may explain why it also makes it the first day I’ve TRULY TRULY wanted to give up. I was going through plenty of excuses in my head as to how I could explain to the two people that read my blog that I had to quit. I’m hungry. And everything sounds really terrific to me. Especially pizza. And fajitas. Even Margaret Thatcher’s food looks good to me at this point. Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration.

Luckily, I’m still focusing on the delayed gratification, and it’s still overriding the instant gratification of pizza. You’re doing this for your hair, Lexie, you’re doing this for your hair!

My energy levels are definitely normal, if not better than before I was on the reboot. For the first time since I’ve started the reboot, I decided to attempt some exercise. I headed over to the lake for a short run.

A friend of mine asked me about reboot has impacted the quality of my bathroom time. Well, actually, she specifically wanted to know if it was solid or not solid. My first night of the reboot, I was definitely having a few gastrointestinal issues (the woman who does the reboot in the movie has a similar problems the first few juices she has). Since the first night, however, my bathroom time has been ideal and even satisfying. Too much information? There’s no such thing!

The number on the scale this morning was kind of shocking. The morning of day 3 I was still the same weight as the morning of day 2 (down three pounds). But the morning of day 4, I was down an additional four pounds. So we’re down seven pounds total so far. But like I’ve said to so many people who criticize the reboot, it really isn’t about weight loss. Obviously you can’t maintain a weight loss that resulted from a diet/lifestyle that you can’t maintain in the long run.

So the good news is, I’ve got less than a week to go. The bad news is, I’m not halfway there yet. I’ll see you tomorrow for day 5.

Juice Reboot: Day 3

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

What I drank:

Cucumber, celery, carrot.

Cucumber, celery, apple.

Green apple, carrot.

Cucumber, strawberry.

How I’m feeling:

I had high energy all throughout work today and no headaches whatsoever. I was hungry around 11:00 a.m. but nothing too, too terrible. I’m still having really strong cravings for junk food (Baja Fresh–I miss you so!), but I’m also craving really healthy food as well (I want salad and homemade chicken noodle soup right now, please). Then again. Maybe I’m just craving solid food in general.

I would definitely describe Day 3 as an improvement on Day 2. But it’s kind of hard to be on Day 3 and realize that I have an entire week left to go.

I called a friend for support when I was really, really missing food. He brought up that I need to start thinking of delayed gratification rather than instant gratification. Ultimately, I will have more gratification for completing the 1o day reboot successfully then if I bail on it and get the instant gratification of eating delicious, delicious Baja Fresh.

Of course it’s always easier to give pep talks to others than it is to give pep talks to yourself. Two coworkers started the reboot today and I motivated them by saying, “You’ve been eating food your entire life. Ten days without it really isn’t asking that much.”

So seven more days of juicing it is.

Here are some pictures taken this morning of my hair, skin (no make up), and bod after two days of juicing:

See you for day 4 tomorrow.

Juice Reboot: Day 2

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Day 2:

What I drank:

Three apples, four pieces celery, one cucumber.

Two apples, three pieces celery, two cucumbers, three carrots (not pictured).

Four pieces celery, one cucumber, three carrots, three cloves of ginger. (Three cloves was definitely too many. This juice was PUNGENT).

Two cups pure cranberry juice. (not pictured)

One pear, six carrots, chunk of ginger.

How I’m feeling:

I woke up this morning with a terrible headache. I’m assuming I was going through some sort of withdrawal. Between 8:30 and 11 a.m., I was feeling really sluggish and still had a headache. I gave in and took some ibuprofen after my second juice of the day. After this I felt completely fine.

I also never really felt hungry at all today. It was very strange. I’m still craving food, but not out of hunger.

I was down three pounds on the scale this morning after one day of juicing.

See you tomorrow for day 3.

Juice Reboot: Day 1

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

A while back, I watched the documentary “Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead–a Joe Cross Film.”

The movie documents Cross as he follows a fresh juice diet for 60 days.

Recently, a few coworkers and I decided that we’d follow the juice reboot for 10 days. Why?

According to the Reboot Your Life website, the benefits of a juice reboot include:

  • Boost the number of fruit/vegetable servings you can ingest in a day
  • Break the cycle of unhealthy eating
  • Retrain your brain to crave fruits and vegetables
  • Manage your weight
  • Promote a lifestyle that will lower risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, macular degeneration, cognitive decline and mental illness including depression
  • Promote longevity
  • Decrease aches and pains in joints and muscles
  • Improve your immunity
  • Promote increased energy levels
  • Promote healthy skin, nails and hair
  • Gain greater access to digestive enzymes locked away in whole produce through juicing

I plan to document the next 10 days of the juice reboot here on Lex and the City. If you think this is stupid and wish I would stick to the regular content, I’ll see you back here in 10 days. Til then, here’s what day one of the reboot looked like:

Day 1:

What I drank:

Four apples, six pieces of celery, piece of ginger.

Six carrots, three apples, one piece of ginger.

Three cups pure cranberry juice. (not pictured)

Two granny smith apples, one cucumber, two pieces of celery.

How I’m feelings:

Around 11 a.m. I was REALLY hungry. I basically was questioning how the hell I was going to get through the next 10 days. It was especially bad whenever I could smell someone at the office cooking bacon. (Note–my coworker claims no one was making bacon, that I was just smelling things.)

The hunger eventually faded, but I definitely noticed that I was tired and cranky. And of course I started to have some pretty intense cravings for some pretty random things, including but not limited to steak, McDonalds, peanut butter frosting, and gum. Did I mention I’m not chewing gum during the reboot. HARSH.

See you tomorrow for day two of the reboot. Day two and day three are supposedly the hardest of the 10 days. Looking forward to it, for sure.
